The Shinto Religion

Brief History

Shinto is a religion that started about 500 BCE. It's name is derived from the Chinese words shin tao which means The Way Of The Gods. Shinto is a unique religion in which those who practice it worship all the deities of heaven and earth and unlike most other religions, Shinto has no real founder, no written scriptures, no body of religious law, and only a very loosely-organized priesthood. In the Meiji period Shinto was made the official religion of the state of Japan.

The Shinto religion is very tolerant of other religions. It is common for Shinto believers to pay respects to other religions and their objects of worship.

Shinto Kami are collectively known as Yaoyorozu no Kami, which basically means eight million gods. Shinto Kami essentially take the shape of things important to life like mountains, rain, wind, sun, moon...etc. Humans turn into Kami after they die so family members create little shrines where they revere their deceased family member. Shinto is an optimistic faith in which there is no right or wrong. Naturally everyone is considered to be good and evil is believed to be caused by evil spirits. Like in most anime you have seen evil can be kept away by performing purifications and giving offerings to the Kami (God). Both men and women are allowed to become priests and they are also allowed to marry and have children. They generally live in the shrine where they perform a number of services from preparing festivals, to offering services to the community like purifications and prayers.
